Auszeichnung - Award

Monica von Garden Faerie's Musings ueberraschte mich vor einigen Tagen mit einer Blogauszeichnung! Monica lobte nicht nur meinen Gartenblog, sondern auch meinen anderen zur Zeit etwas vernachlaessigten Kulturblog.

Monica from Garden Faerie's Musings surprised me a few days ago with a blog award. She not only praised my gardenblog but also my other currently neglected one, which is about cultural differences between Austria and the US.

Wie es halt so mit Auszeichnungen ist, sollte man diese wiederum an andere weitergeben. Laut Regelung sollten 10 weitere BloggerInnen damit bestueckt werden. Die Auswahl ist nicht leicht und ich beschraenke mich daher auf nur 3, obwohl ich leicht jeden in meinem Blogroll angefuehrten Blog anfuehren koennte (ansonsten waere ich ja keine treue Leserin).

As awards go, you should pass them along. According to the rule I should give it to 10 more bloggers. It's difficult to choose from all the great blogs I have been reading throughout the last year. Every single one in my blogroll is very enjoyable. Why else would I keep reading them?

1. Auch wenn ich nicht immer einen Kommentar hinterlasse, erfreue ich mich immer an Marys Beitraegen von Mary's view. Sie bringt mich immer wieder zum Lachen mit ihren humorvollen Beitraegen uber ihre Haustiere, Tiere im allgemeinen und die Menschheit. Sie zeigt ausserdem auch immer heitere Garten- und Naturfotos.

Even though I am not always commenting, I truly enjoy Mary's posts from Mary's view. She has a great humor and always makes me laugh with her comments about pets, animals, and people. Her garden and nature pictures are very cheerful as well.

Es sieht hier viel dunkler aus als es wirklich war. Wir hatten wieder ein paar Tage Regentage, was natuerlich wunderbar fuer die Pflanzen ist, aber mich abhaelt, auch wirklich Zeit in diesem Stuhl zu verbringen. Als ich ihn letztes Jahr bekam, plante ich ihn fuer die hintere Zaunecke, wo es den ganzen Tag warm und sonnig ist. Es stellte sich heraus, dass das eine hirnverbrannte Idee war, nachdem man es dann schliesslich nicht mal lange genug darin aushielt um etwas zu trinken. Hier im Schatten ist es viel gemuetlicher.

It actually looks darker here than it really was. The last few days we got lots of rain again. Good for the plants, but keeps me from actually spending some time in this chair. When I got it last year I planned to put it in the back fence corner where it's nice and sunny all day long. Turned out that this wasn't a great idea, because it's way too hot to even enjoy a drink in there. So back here in the shade is much better.

2. Bei Edith von Wanderungen durch die Natur lernt man jeden Tag etwas dazu. Manchmal ueber wildwachsende Pflanzen. Manchmal ueber die Tierwelt. Langweilig ist es aber bestimmt nie. Stolpert man ueber ein interessantes Insekt, kann man ziemlich sicher sein, dass Edith nicht nur den Namen kennt, sondern auch noch sonst allerhand Interessantes darueber zu berichten hat.

You can always learn from Edith from Wanderungen durch die Natur. Sometimes about wild flowers. Sometimes about fauna. It's definitely never boring. If you ever happen to find an interesting looking insect, you can be pretty sure that Edith not only knows its name but all other kind of interesting facts about it.

Das hier ist nun der vordere Teil der Zaunecke. Der Schmetterlingsflieder wurde geschnitten und etwas mehr zur Mitte versetzt. Jetzt bleibt der Taglilie mehr Platz und auch andere Pflanzen fanden in der Beeterweiterung noch Platz.

This is the front view of my fence corner. I cut the butterflyshrub and moved it more towards the middle. Now the daylily has more space to spread as well. Since the bed got larger I have now even more space for plans.

3. Victoria's Blog von Living and Gardening in Idaho war einer der ersten Blogs, die ich gelesen habe und noch immer gerne lese. Sie berichtet nicht nur von ihrem vielfaeltigen Garten, sondern vom Leben allgemein in Boise, Idaho. Besonders fuer Weinliebhaber empfehlenswert:)

Victoria's Blog from Living and Gardening in Idaho is one of the first blogs I started reading and I still like reading. She not only writes about her versatile garden, but also about life in general in Boise, Idaho. Especially recommendable to wine-lovers.

Meine hintere Zaunecke: noch ist es nicht so ausgefuellt, wie ich es gerne haette. Jedes Jahr halt ein Stueckchen Gruen dazu. Mit der Zeit wirds dann schon so werden wie in meinen Vorstellungen.

The backside of my fence-corner: it's not quite as full yet as I would like it to be. Each year a little bit more green. Hopefully with time it's going to turn out like it is already in mind.

Ende April

Noch immer sind die Azaleen und die Tulpen fleissig am Bluehen, obwohl letztere doch schon zum Grossteil auch verwelkt sind. Das Schoene ist, dass nicht alle Azaleen zur gleichen Zeit bluehen. So bleibt mir die Bluetenpracht laenger erhalten. Sobald einer abgeblueht ist, faengt der naechste an, obwohl es dich dabei oft um dieselbe Sorte handelt. Es macht anscheinend doch einen grossen Unterschied, wieviel Sonne und Waerme sie bekommen.

The azaleas and the tulips are still great to look at, even though lots of the tulips are already done blooming. The good thing is that not azaleas are blooming at the same time so there are blooms over a longer time period. As soon as one is finished, the next one starts, even though very often I bought the exat same kind. I guess it does make a difference how much sun and warmth they are getting.

Die Tulpen am Strassenrand sind in Rosatoenen. Passt gut zu den anderen Pflanzen, nachdem alle etwas rosa gehalten sind. Die Hibiskusstraeuche habe mittlerweile auch ihre Blaetter bekommen.


The tulips on the side of the road are all pinkish. That fits quite well to the rest of the plants there, since they are all kept in that color. The hibiscus started getting its blooms as well.


Auch die Weigele steht mit ihren Knospen schon bereit. Letztes Jahr neu gepflanzt hat sie nur ein paar Blueten bekommen.

Also the weigela is having buds. It was planted last spring but only got a couple blooms.


Auch der Flieder wurde erst letztes Jahr gepflanzt. Er ist aber noch zu klein, um heuer zu bluehen. Ueberall in den Vorgaerten kann man sie jetzt schon bewundern.


Also the lilac was planted last year. It's still too small to bloom this year. You can notice them now in everybody's front yard.

Die letzten paar Tage waren sehr regenreich. Heute entdeckte ich beim Spindelstrauch unzaehlige Laeuse und zum Glueck auch Marienkaefer.
The last few days it rained a lot. When I was outside today I saw those aphids at the burning bush. At least there were also a few ladybugs there to get rid of them.

Nachbar's Baum, der zu mir rueberhaengt, ist auch wieder mit Blaettern bestueckt. Schoen, wenn man wieder etwas Sichtschutz hat.

My neighbor's tree, hanging over my garden, is also covered with leaves again. Great to have some screen again.

Die Maigloeckchen kommen auch schoen langsam. Freu mich darauf besonders, nachdem es Ableger vom urspruenglichen Garten der Grossmutter meines Mannes sind.


Lily of the Valley are coming also. I am really looking forward to those since I get them from my husband's grandmother's garden.

Kurz nachdem die Wiese zum ersten Mal gemaeht wurde, war sie am naechsten Tag mit unzaehligen gelben Loewenzaehnen uebersaeht. Ich dachte, ich habe davon Fotos gemacht, aber anscheinend nur in meiner Vorstellung. Hier stehen also die Verbluehten, damit sie sich weiter vermehren koennen.

Shortly after the lawn was cut for the first time it was covered with yellow dandelions. I thought I took a couple pictures, but I guess it was just in my imagination. So I made at least this one. I like having them.

Sommertemperaturen

Die letzten paar Tage hatten wir regelrechtes Sommerwetter. In der Frueh war es zwar wieder recht kalt mit bis zu 0 Grad. Dafuer hat es sich ordentlich unter Tags aufgewaermt. Heute hatten wir 32 Grad. Morgen soll es auch nochmal so einen schoenen Tag geben. Da werde ich sicherlich den Tag dann draussen verbringen. Der Bananenstaude hat das natuerlich besonders gut getan. Das erste Foto ist vor 3 Tagen augenommen worden. Das zweite heute. Wahnsinn, wie schnell das Blatt sich gewandelt hat.

The last few days we had great summerly weather. Even though it got cold again in the morning with temps down to the low 30s, during the day it warmed up to the high 80s. Today should be such a nice day again. So I will enjoy being outside. The bananaplant really liked the heat. The first picture was taken only 3 days ago. The second one today. Amazing, how quickly the leave grew.












Zum Abschluss noch ein fast-Vollmond-Bild. Mittlerweile merkt man, wie alle Baeume schoen gruen werden. Sogar die Eichenbaeume haben angefangen, wieder Blaetter zu bekommen. Es wird nicht mehr allzulange dauern, bis mein Schattengarten wirklich wieder hauptsaechlich im Schatten ist.
To end this short post an almost fullmoon picture. You can really notice now how all the trees start getting green now. Even the oaktrees are getting new leaves again. Not too much longer until my shadegarden is back being in the shade.

Tierischer Besuch - Animal Visit

Nachdem die letzten kalten Tage vorbei waren, habe ich das Vogelbad wieder nach draussen gebracht und aufgestellt. Es dauerte nicht lange und tatsaechlich machen seitdem zahlreiche Voegel hier Pause. Im letzten Jahr hat es ihnen ueberhaupt nicht gefallen obwohl es sich am selben Platz befindet. Vielleicht habe ich durchs Fuettern im Winter ja ihr Vertrauen gefunden :-) Sie kommen nicht nur um Wasser zu trinken, sondern um wirklich auch ein Bad zu nehmen. Dabei sind sie recht ungeduldig und koennen es kaum erwarten bis ihr Voraenger damit fertig ist. Leider sind sie noch nicht sehr fotografierfreudig. Vom Computer aus kann ich sie herrlich beobachten. Nur habe ich bei dem Fenster ein Gitter und dann wird das Foto nichts. Bis ich draussen bin sind sie wieder weg. Warte ich draussen mit der Kamera auf sie, lassen sie sich ueberhaupt nicht blicken. Sobald ich die Kamera wieder hineingetragen habe, stoert es sie ueberhaupt nicht, wenn ich draussen meine Arbeiten verrichte.

When the last cold days were gone I put the birdbath outside again. It didn't take long and the first birds came to get some water. Last year not one drank out of it although it's in the same spot. Maybe I gained their trust by feeding them during the winter:-) They are not only coming now to drink water but also to take a bath. Sometimes it's so busy that they wait in line to do so. The only bad thing is that they don't like me to take pictures of them. I can observe them from when I sit at the computer. That window has screens, so pictures wouldn't turn out nicely. By the time I get the camera and go outside they are long gone. Even waiting for them won't help. As soon as the camera is back inside, they are all back. It doesn't bother them at all when I am walking around closeby without it.
Letzte Woche lag leider ein toter Vogel (Star?) im Gras. Ich hab keine Verletzungen gesehen, aber vielleicht hat ihn ja doch eine Katze erwischt.

Last week there was a dead bird (sparrow?) lying in the lawn. I couldn't see any injuries, but maybe a cat got it afterall.

Moeglich waere es. Seitdem ich die Katzenminze vor einem Monat gepflanzt habe, tummeln sich naemlich ploetzlich saemtliche Katzen der Nachbarschaft in meinem Hintergarten. Das habe ich mir nicht so vorgestellt. Ich habe das Pflaenzchen eher fuer meine eigenen Katzen besorgt.
It would be a possibility. Ever since I planted the catmint a month ago, several neighborhood cats are gathering now in in my backyard. I had more my own cats in mind when I bought the plant.

Auf meinem unbekannten Baeumchen (ich schaetze es wird wirklich eine Kirschart sein, aber noch zu jung um zu Bluehen) krabbelten auch schon ein paar Marienkaefer herum. Letztes Jahr hatte es recht viele Laeuse. Mal sehen wie es heuer wird.

On my unknown little tree (I guess it's a cherry, but still too young to actually bloom), were several ladybugs. Last year it had quite a lot of aphids. We'll see how it will be this year.

Wachstum und Veränderungen - New Growth and Changes

Die letzten Tage hatte ich nicht besonders viel Zeit fuer den Garten. Meist bin ich kurz nur mal mit der Kamera herumgegangen um zu sehen, was sich Neues tut. Arbeit gaebe es allerdings schon genug zu tun. Der Rasen sollte schon gemaeht werden und auch die Beete vom ersten Unkraut wieder befreit werden. Jeden Tag gibts jetzt so viele Veraenderungen, dass ich kaum nachkomme darueber zu berichten.
The last few days were quite busy and I didn't have much time for the garden. Most time I just went outside quickly with the camera to see what new stuff is going on. There is lots of work to do right now like mowing the lawn or weeding the beds for the first time this year. Every day there are so many changes now that I have a hard time keeping up posting about them.


Vom Fenster aus bemerkte ich ein paar rosa Tulpen. Erst draussen bin ich dann draufgekommen, dass es dieselbe Tulpe ist, ueber die ich gestern schon berichtet habe. Da war sie allerdings eher gruen als rosa. Interessant, wie schnell sich die Farbe aenderte.
I noticed a pink tulip out of the window. When checking it outside I saw that it is the same one I already posted about yesterday. Interesting how its green color changed so fast.

Andere Farbveraenderungen kommen von den Lavendelheiden (pieris). Die weissbluehende hat neue dunkelrote Blaeter bekommen. Die neuen Blaetter der Rosabluehenden sind sehr hell gruen. Dadurch wirkt der Garten jetzt schon viel bunter als noch vor ein paar Wochen.
Other colorly changes are coming from the pieris. The white blooming one got new bright red leaves. The pink blooming one has new very light-green leaves. Alone this makes the garden look already so much more colorful.

Weitere Azaleen haben zum Bluehen begonnen. Mir kommt vor als ob die heuer viel frueher dran sind als letztes Jahr.

A few more azaleas started to bloom. It seems to me as if they are so much earlier this year than last year.

Auch die Hortensien sind fleissig am Wachsen. Nachdem wir keinen Frost mehr hatten, sehen die ersten Blaetter auch noch schoen aus. Letztes Jahr waren sie eben alle erfroren und dadurch recht schwarz.

Also the hydrangeas are growing. Since we didn't have any late freeze this year anymore the leaves already look very nice. Last year they were all black from the freeze.


Ueberrascht war ich heute ueber die Clematis. Letztes Jahr habe ich mir drei kleine Pflaenzchen besorgt. Sie wurden etwas vernachlaessigt und sind ueberhaupt nicht gewachsen. Schon im Herbst waren sie quasi verschwunden. Jetzt endecke ich dieses riesige Wachstum. Ich muss mir jetzt also ein Klettergeruest dafuer besorgen.

I am very surprised about the clematis. Last year I got three tiny plants. I neglected them a little bit and they didn't grow at all. By fall they completely disappeared. Now this huge growth! I guess I need to get a trellis.


Seit ein paar Jahren nun versuche ich kriechenden Phlox als Bodendecker. Im Frueher finde ich diese rosa Polster wirklich schoen. Jedes Jahr verfaulen mir einige im Winter. Heuer sind ein paar winzigkleine wieder gekommen. In der vorderen Zaunecke ist es mittlerweile ein riesiger Fleck, dem es anscheinend dort gut gefaellt.
I have been trying to have some creeping phlox for a few years now. The pink blooms really look great in spring. However, most of them don't survive the winter in my yard. They get brown and look kind of rotten. A couple small ones made it this year. In the front fence-corner is the only big one left. It seems to like the location there.

Gut im Wachsen sind allerdings die Hosta, die ich heuer bei Aldi gekauft habe. Ich sollte unbedingt die restlichen Pflanzen auch noch eingraben.

The hosta I bought a couple months ago at Aldi's are growing great though. That reminds me that I need to finish planting the rest of my plants.

Die Stechpalme ist auch von unzaehligen Blueten bedeckt, die fleissig von allerlei Insekten umschwaermt werden.

The holly is covered with tiny blooms. Lots of insects are swarming that area constantly.



Die Anemonen sind nun ganz aufgeblueht. Schoene Farbklekse. Ich hoffe, dass sie sich vermehren werden.

The anemones are completely open now. Nice colorspots. I hope they get more with time.

Tulpen - Tulips

Die erste rote Tulpe von letzter Woche ist leider gar nicht zum Erbluehen gekommen. Irgendjemand hat daran anscheinend Gefallen gefunden und sie einfach abgebissen. Auch die blaue Anemone war weg.
The first red tulip from last week didn't stick around long enough to bloom. Something must have really liked it and bit it off. Also the blue anemone was gone.

Aber es gibt ja Nachschub und im Lauf der Woche sind etliche neue Tulpen erblueht, obwohl die vom letzten Jahr heuer leider nicht mehr gekommen sind. Ich hatte ein paar Sorten, die mir wirklich gut gefielen.
Many more started to bloom this week. Last year I had some different kinds, which were very beautiful. Those didn't come back this year though.

Diese hier gefaellt mir heuer eindeutig am besten. Die spitze Form und die roetliche Farbkombination sieht finde ich sehr edel aus.
I definitely like this one the best this year. I find the pointed shape and the redish color combination makes it look very noble.

Auch die gelb-rote ist farblich sehr schoen.
Also this yellow-red one has great colors.

Die tiefrote, fast violette ist leider noch immer nicht ganz aufgeblueht.
This very darkred, almost purple one still didn't open up completely.

Heuer habe ich unzaehlig gelbe Tulpen. Fast zuviel fuer meinen Geschmack. Trotzdem sehen sie ganz schoen aus.
I have tons of yellow tulips this year. Almost too many for my liking. They still look nice though.


Diese neue finde ich sehr ungewoehnlich, doch interessant.
This one looks very unusual for me. Very interesting though.
