Sommerliches Wetter - Summerlike Weather

Seit einer Woche haben wir nun schon schoenes sommerliches Wetter. Im Garten sieht man daher auch einiges Neues. Die Stella d'Oro hat letztes Wochenende schon mal eine Bluete gehabt, aber da habe ich sie gerade verpasst, nachdem ich nicht jeden Tag im Garten gewesen bin.

We have had great summerlike weather for a week now. There is lots of new stuff blooming. Stella d'Oro started blooming last weekend. However, I missed the first bloom since I didn't check every day.


Auch vor dem Haus sieht es recht schoen mit den ueberfuellten Rosenbueschen aus. Bin mir nicht mehr ganz sicher, was ich da sonst noch eingebuddelt habe. Ich glaube, es koennte eine asiatische Lilie sein. Ich werds ja sehen, wenn die Knospe offen ist.

It also looks very nice in front of the house with the very full rose shrubs. I'm not quite sure what else I planted there, but I think it could be an asiatic lily. I will know for sure when it's open.

Ueber meine Hortensien freue ich mich heuer besonders. Sie haben keinen Frostschaden erlitten und sogar die kleine hat sich mittlerweile vom Rasenmaeher erholt. Freu mich schon, wenn die Farben dann kraeftig blau sind.

I am very happy with my hydrangeas this year. They didn't get any frost damage and even the smaller one started growing this year, after being cut several times with the lawn mower a couple years ago. I am looking forward to when they are all in bright blue blooms.

Auf dem Geissbart befinden sich unzaehlige Kaefer (?). Finde ich aeusserst seltsam.

There are tons of little brown bugs on the goatsbeard. Really weird.

Vor ein paar Wochen gekauft, beginnt es jetzt zu bluehen. Ich hab jetzt den Namen vergessen, hab aber zumindest noch das Karterl:) Meine Eltern hatten so einen Strauch als ich ein kleines Kind war und der hat mir schon immer gut gefallen.

I got this a few weeks ago and it just started blooming. I forgot the name again, but at least I still have the tag. My parents had one of those since I was a little kid. I always liked it.

Diese gelbe Wildblume blueht auch seit einigen Wochen. Beim nicht genauen Hinschauen dachte ich, es sei ein Loewenzahn. Sieht aber ganz anders aus. Ich habe saemtliche Buecher uber Wildblumen durchgeblaettert und keine Abbildung gefunden, die 100% passen wuerde.

This yellow wildflower has been blooming the last couple weeks. First I thought it was a dandelion, but it looks very differently. I looked through several books of wildflowers and couldn't find one image which looks exactly like it.


Einer meiner Yucca hat eine Bluetenstab bekommen. Bin gespannt, ob der andere auch noch kommen wird.

One of my yucca started getting the rod for the blooms. Will see if the other one still starts to grow.

Meine Wilderdbeeren gedeien heuer aeusserst gut. Anscheinend ist niemand daran interessiert, daran zu naschen.

Wild strawberries are growing everywhere this year. It seems nobody wants to try them.

Letzte Woche fragte mich mein Mann, warum ich denn eigentlich nichts Nuetzliches anbaue. Also habe ich jetzt Tomatenpflaenzchen besorgt. Jetzt darf ich also nicht mehr Margits Tomatenposts wie bisher ueberspringen. Ich bin momentan dabei, das aufzuholen:)

Last week my husband asked me why I don't plant something useful, like tomatoes. So I went out and got a few. Now I can't skip Margit's posts about her tomatoes anymore. I already started catching up on reading them:)

Ein langes Wochenende - A long weekend

Wir haben endlich seit langem heute wieder einen Feiertag und dazu auch noch das ganze Wochenende ueber schoenes Wetter. Bisher war der ganze Mai sehr verregnet. Also nutzten wir gleich den ersten Tag und machten einen Ausflug nach Front Royal und Winchester.

In Front Royal gibt es eine Fahrtour mit einigen Stationen vom Buergerkrieg. Mich interessieren die genauen Details von jeder Schlacht eigentlich weniger und daher zeige ich hier was mir unterwegs so gefallen hat.

Finally a holiday again and even the weather is great all weekend long. Sofar it rained most days in May. So we used the first day and took a trip to Front Royal and Winchester. There is a civil war driving tour in Front Royal. Since I am not interested in every little detail from all the battles, I am showing here what I found interesting.

Die Millenium-Sonnenuhr wurde 1999 aufgestellt um sowohl das vergangene 20. Jahrhundert, als auch das neue 21. zu feiern.

Ich genoss ein paar Minuten bei der noerdlichen Abzweigung des Shenandoah Flusses. Sehr viele Leute waren mit ihren Booten unterwegs oder um zu fischen. Wie man sehen kann, gibt es auch immer Idioten, die ihr Leben gefaehrden. Kein Wunder, dass man immer wieder hoert, dass Menschen im Fluessen ertrinken.

The Millennium Sundial was installed in 1999 to commemorate the end of the 20th century and to honor the beginn of the 21st century. Front Royal is nick-named the canoe capital of Virginia.

I liked spending a few minutes at the north fork of the Shenandoah River. Many people were out with their boats and to fish. As you can see, there are always some idiots, who risk their life. No wonder that you can always hear about people drowning in rivers.

Unterwegs kamen wir an diesem alten Haus vorbei, das anscheinend schon seit langem unbewohnt ist. Interessant, wie schnell Natur wieder Besitz davon nimmt.

The last stop on the driving tour was this old house, which seemed to have stayed empty for a long time. Interesting, how quickly nature takes over again.


In Winchester besuchten wir zwei Friedhoefe, die nebeneinander liegen. Der Nationalfeiertag war anlaesslich des heutigen Gedenktags mit Fahnen geschmueckt. Dieser Friedhof wurde im Buergerkrieg gegruendet. Soldaten der Nordstaaten, die hier in Schlachten starben, sind hier begraben.

In Winchester we visited two cemetaries, which are right next to each other. The National cemetary was decorated with flags for Memorial Day. It was founded during the civil war. Union soldiers who died in battles in that area are buried here.

Der Mount Hebron Friedhof war sehr interessant. Um hineinzukommen, muss man erst mal durch dieses imposante Gebaeude durchfahren. Darin befinden sich die Bueroraeume und die Kapelle. Das mittlere Bild ganz unten zeigt die Ueberreste der lutherischen Kirche, die aus dem spaeten 18. Jahrhundert stammt. Eine Inschrift spricht von "Die Teutsche Lutherische Gemeinde in Winchester in der Grafschafft Friedrich in dem Staate Virginien". Zwei Turmglocken wurden in Bremen hergestellt. Eine dieser Glocken duerfte noch in der heutigen Kirche vorhanden sein.

In einem anderen Teil des Friedhofs sind die Monumente und Graeber fuer die Suedstaaten.

The Mount Hebron cemetary is very interesting. To get into it, you have to drive through this impressive building, which is used for offices and the chapel. The middle picture at the very bottom shows the ruins of the first lutheran church in Winchester, which was built at the end of the 18th century. It had two bells for the tower, which were made in Bremen, Germany. One of them seems still to be used by the new church.

In another section of the cemetary are the monuments and graves of the confederate soldiers.

Im Wald wohnen - Living in the woods

Obwohl die meisten Leute hier in Wohnsiedlungen wohnen, in denen die Haeuser recht nahe beinander sind und sich ein Haus dem anderen gleicht, gibt es doch auch recht viele, die auf den Hinterstrassen wohnen und etwas weiter abgeschieden sind. Meist liegen diese dann etwas von der Strasse zurueck, oft fast nicht sehbar.
Although most people live here in subdivisions with their cookie-cutter houses, a lot of people still live on the backroads as well, where life is a little bit more secluded. Most of those houses are further back from the street, sometimes you can't even see them.



So auch meine Schwiegereltern. Das Haus ist quasi vom Wald umgeben, was nun unzaehlige Tiere anlockt. Sie werden oft nicht nur von streunenden Katzen, Eichhoernchen und Voegel besucht, sondern auch von Waschbaeren und Beutelratten. Nachdem letztere nacht-aktiv sind, habe ich sie leider bisher noch nie zum Fotografieren erwischt.
So are my in-laws. The house is right in the middle of the woods, which attracts lots of animals. They get visits not only from cats, squirrels, and birds, but also from racoons and opossums. Since the latter are night active, I never got the chance to take a picture of them.



Ums Haus herum sind viele Azaleen und Rhododendren gesetzt. Die Azaleenfotos sind von Anfang Mai. Mittlerweile sind sie alle verblueht. Die meisten sind so ca. 30 Jahre alt.
Around the house are lots of azaleas and rhododendra. The azalea pics were taken early May. In the meantime they are all done blooming. Most of them are about 30 years old.



Besonders hier sieht man, wie schoen gross die werden koennen.
You can really notice here how big they can get.

Momentan duftet es dort herrlich vom japanischen Geissblatt. Ich finde es sieht mit den weiss/gelben Blueten sehr schoen aus. Nur schade, dass es so stark wuchert, sodass es hier als invasiv gilt. Ich haette zwar im hinteren Gartenteil genuegend Platz dafuer. Aber es wuerde sich dann ja nicht nur auf dort beschraenken, sondern ueberall hochkommen. Also ist es wahrscheinlich besser wenn ich es im Wald lassen werde.

At the moment it's smelling awesome there from the japanese honesuckle. I find the white and yellow flowers beautiful. Too bad it's growing so wildly that it's considered as invasive here. I would have lots of empty space in the very back of my garden. I am just afraid though that it would come up everywhere then where I don't need it. So I guess I better leave it in the woods.

Zum ersten Mal habe ich gestern dieses Farnkraut entdeckt. Die koennte ich wirklich gut in meinem Schattenbeet brauchen. Bin mir sicher, meiner Schwiegermutter wirds gar nicht auffallen, wenn die mit mir mitkommen;)

For the first time I saw those farns yesterday. I really could need those in my shady flowerbed. I am pretty sure she won't even notice them being gone;)

Zuerst glaubte ich, das hier ist ein Holunder. Meine Mama machte immer als wir Kinder waren einen Saft von den Blueten. Wirklich gut. Zufaellig bin ich aber auf ein Bild gestossen, das genauso aussieht und es ist als wilde Hortensie beschrieben.

First I thought this was an elderberry. My mom used to make juice out of the blooms when we were kids. Tastes really good. By coincidence I found a picture which looks just like it and it is described as a wild hydrangea.

Beim linken Fotos weiss ich nicht, worum es sich handelt. Beim rechten denke ich, dass es ein Essigbaum sein koennte.

I don't know what the left picture could be. I think the right one is a rhus typhina.

Zum Abschluss moechte ich noch diesen herrlichen Tulpenbaum und dessen Bluete zeigen. Ist mir bisher auch noch nicht aufgefallen, dass der im Fruehjahr blueht. Ich hab etwas darueber nachgelesen. Er ist hier beheimatet und ist anscheinend der groesste Laubbaum hier. Er bekommt erst nach 20 Jahren die ersten Blueten. Nachdem er so hoch ist, ist es relativ schwer, die Blueten am Baum selbst zu sehen. Man muss eben warten, bis ein paar herunterfallen.

To end here I would like to show this great tuliptree and its bloom. I never noticed before that it is actually blooming in spring. I read a little bit about it and find it very interesting that it seems to be the tallest decidious tree in the US. It takes 20 years to bloom for the first time. Since it's such a tall tree it's hard to see the flowers on the tree itself. You have to wait until they fall on the ground.

Ich sehe rosa - I see pink

Obwohl mir die Farbe rosa eigentlich gar nicht so gut gefaellt, habe ich doch vieles in dieser Farbe. Und wenn man genau schaut, dann sieht man ueberall rosa, auch wenn es auf den ersten Anblick vielleicht gar nicht so aussieht.

Although I am not a big fan of pink, I have lots of flowers with that color. If you look exactly, you can notice everwhere something pink, even in places where it doesn't seem so first.


Meine Robin Hood Rose hat letzte Woche zu bluehen begonnen. Ich habe drei Stueck davon von einem Pflanzenkatalog vor ein paar Jahren bestellt, weil mir die Fotos gut gefallen haben. Sie wurde als rot beschrieben, ist jedoch ein dunkles rosa. Der Strauch hat unzaehlige kleine Blueten und geht nicht nur in die Hoehe, sondern vor allem auch in die Breite.

My Robin Hood Rose started to bloom last week. I bought three of them a few years ago from a catalog because I liked how it looked there on pictures. It was described as red blooming, but is more a dark pink. The shrub has tons of small blooms. It doesn't only grow up, but gets also quite wide.

Ich hab zwar erst vor kurzem Fotos von der Margerite gezeigt, aber mir gefaellt sie so gut in der Nahaufnahme. Diesesmal habe ich auch eine noch zugemachte Bluete dabei.

I recently showed pictures from this daisy, but I like it so much that it is currently my favorite flower to photograph. This time I also included a closed bloom.



Auch den bulgarischen Lauch habe ich schon mal gezeigt, aber jetzt sieht man wenigstens auch die Bluete wenn man daran vorbeigeht. Man muss sich nicht mehr unbedingt darunter hinlegen:)

I also showed the nectaroscordum recently, but now you can actually see the bloom without having to lie down beneath it:)



Dieses Baeumchen steht genau am Zaun und gehoert eigentlich zum Nachbarn. Zumindest die Wurzeln stehen beim Nachbarn. Im Lauf der Jahre hat er sich durch den Draht durchgezwengt und ist jetzt eher auf meiner Seite. Ich weiss leider nicht, worum es sich dabei handelt. Er hat aber momentan so fruchtartige Gebilde.

This little tree is actually right at the fence and belongs to my neighbor. At leastt the roots are on the neighbor's side. Throughout the years it grew around the fence and is now more on my side. I don't know what it is, but it has some fruit-like things hanging on it right now.

Die erste Kroete in diesem Jahr. Man muss hier genau schauen, um die rosa/roten Tupen zu erkennen. Sie wurde durchs Rasenmaehen heute gestoert.

The first tiny toad this year. You have to look exactly to notice to pink and red spots. I disturbed it with cutting grass today.

Staatliches Arboretum von Virginia

Am Sonntag machten meine Schwiegermutter und ich einen Ausflug zum staatlichen Arboretum von Virginia. Es liegt in der Naehe von Winchester und liegt ca. 70 Meilen nordwestlich von uns. Man konnte deutlich merken, dass das Klima dort etwas anders ist. Vieles, das bei uns schon wieder verblueht ist, stand dort gerade im Hoehepunkt.
On Sunday my MIL and I made a trip to the State Arboretum of Virginia. It's close to Winchester, about 70 miles northwest from us. You could clearly notice that it's a little bit cooler up there. Some plants, which are already done blooming here, were still very nice looking up there.

Am Muttertagswochenende findet dort immer ein Gartenmarkt statt, bei dem unzaehlige lokale Gaertnereien ihre Produkte anbieten. Also haben wir uns erstmal dort aufgehalten und so einiges erstanden. Es gab so eine grosse Vielfalt von Pflanzen, dass die Entscheidung echt schwer war, was man wirklich mitnehmen moechte. Die Gaertnereien bei uns in der Naehe kann man eigentlich vergessen. Sie sind erstens ueberteuert und zweitens haben sie kein grossartiges Angebot. Am Sonntag gab es soviel zu sehen, dass man zuerst gar nicht wusste, wo genau man hinschauen sollte.

On mother's day weekend there is always a Garden Fair there were lots of local nurseries sell their products. So we spent some time there first and bought quite a few things. The selection was awesome! Very difficult to make a decision on what to really get. I was very surprised about that. Our nurseries in town are really expensive and then they don't have a lot of stuff. This Sunday there was so much to see!

Ausser Pflanzen gab es natuerlich auch jede Menge Gartendekorationen zu sehen. Mich interessiert das allerdings weniger. Das einzige was mir gefallen hat waren diese Figuren hier. Ich koennte mir vorstellen, soetwas aehnliches einmal zu besorgen wenn der Garten mal etwas fuelliger ist.
Besides plants there were also lots of garden decorations. I am not very interested in those though. However, I kind of liked those figures. I can imagine getting something similar one day once the garden is a little bit fuller.



Was wurde nun mitgenommen? Ich kann mich ja so aergern, dass ich mir nicht gleich die genauen Namen aufgeschrieben habe. Nicht alle Pflanzen haben Namenskarterl am Topf gehabt. Ich habe einiges fuer den Schattenbereich genommen. Cimicifuga, Monarda, 3 verschiedene Taglilien, rosa Echinacea, Kroetenlilie, Ligularia, Traenerndes Herz (?), Bartfaden (?).
Meine Schwiegermutter hat sich die Haengetoepfe mitgenommen und die Hosta.

Was did we buy? I am mad at myself for not writing the names down right away. Not all the plants were in labeled pots. I took a lot of stuff for the shade: cimicifuga, wild bergamot, pink echinacea, ligularia stenocephala 'The Rocket', tricyrtis, three different kinds of daylilies, bleeding heart (?), penstemon digitalis (?).
My MIL took the hanging baskes and the hosta.



Die Veranstaltung war sehr gut organisiert, vor allem mit dem Parken. Ein Parkwaerter hat sich in Zwischenzeit mit seinem Hund beschaeftigt, dem das Ballspielen natuerlich auch Spass gemacht hat.
The event was very well organised, especially the parking. A parking guard used the time to play with his dog, who also enjoyed it a lot:)



So, nun geht's aber zum eigentlichen Teil des botanischen Garten. Es ist alles im Freien angelegt. Daher haben wir auch bis zum Fruehjahr gewartet. Im Winter waere es recht ungemuetlich und es gaebe dann ja nicht soviel zu sehen. Das Wetter hat aber auch jetzt nicht so mitgespielt. Wir haben gerade 4 Tage Regenwetter hinter uns. Zum Glueck hat es dort aber erst wieder zum Schuetten begonnen als wir auf der Heimfahrt waren.
So, now to the actual arboretum. It's all outside. That's why we waited until spring. I think it wouldn't be that nice in winter. The weather wasn't great now either though. We just had 4 days of rain. At least it didn't start pouring again until we were on our way back home.



Virginischer Schneeflockenstrauch - Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus)

Die grossen Hostablaetter sind schoen zum Ansehen. Ich bin aber jetzt schon mal froh, ueberhaupt Hosta gepflanzt zu haben.

The huge hosta leaves a beautiful. I am just glad I planted some hosta now. Doesn't matter to me what kind.
Ueberall gab es genug Sitzplaetze zum Ausruhen. Sicherlich an heissen Sommertagen sehr angenehm.

There were plenty of beautiful places to rest. I am sure I would have needed it on hot summerdays.

Es gab einen Pfad, der hauptsaechlich einheimische Pflanzen von Virginia hatte. Dabei gab es den wilden Phlox und Akelei. Von den Akeleien gab es jede Menge in allen moeglichen Farben. Bin mir nicht sicher, welche mir am besten gefaellt.

There was a path which only had native plants of Virginia. Some blooming now were the wild phlox and columbine. There were actually lots of columbines there in all kind of colors. I'm not sure which one I like best.

Es gab einige rot-bluehende Baeume. Wunderschoen. Vor allem an einem Regentag wo alles grau-in-grau ist, schien das Rot wirklich aufzuleuchten.

There were quite a few red blooming trees. Beautiful. Especially on a rainyday where everything seems to be gray in gray.

Ich wusste nicht, dass die soschoene Blueten haben. I didn't know they had such beautiful blooms.

Verschiedene Arten vom Hartriegel / a few different types of dogwood

Es gab auch einen kleinen Teich. Interessant waren die Kakteen, Sedum, Yukka und Irisse auf der Steinflaeche.

There was a little pond. Interesting were the cacti, sedum, yucca, and iris on the stone area.

Inmitten von grossen Fichten gab es auch eine Vogelfutterstelle. In middle of huge norway spruces were some birdfeeders.














Zum Schluss noch kurz zum Kraeutergarten. Mir gefaellt, wie Kraeuter und Blumen zusammengesetzt waren. Ein Beet war hauptsaechlich mit Schnittlauch besetzt, der gerade schoen bluehte. Am besten gefiel mir dort der blaue Flachs.

To end the tour we stopped at the herb garden. I liked how the herbs were mixed with perennials. One bed had lots of blooming chives. I liked the blue flax the best.

Kunterbuntes - Colorful Garden

Diese Woche gibt es recht viel Neues vom Garten zu zeigen. Nachdem es recht viele Fotos sind und der Speicherplatz hier ja nicht unendlich ist, habe ich viele Collagen zusammen gestellt.

Beginnen moechte ich mit den Iris. Eine nach der anderen hat jetzt zu bluehen begonnen. Auf der ersten Collage ist hauptsaechlich immer dieselbe Iris abgebildet. Ich musste einfach soviele Makroaufnahmen machen und sie dazugeben.

This week there is lots of new stuff to show from my garden. Since there are tons of pictures and the space here is not unlimited, I put a lot of collages together.
I want to start with the iris. One after the next started blooming. On the first collage there is mainly always the same one to see. I just had to take and add all those Macro-pics.

Diese hier gefaellt mir allerdings am besten. Das Blau ist so schoen kraeftig. An dem Platz sind sie alle etwas unterschiedlich blau - von fastweiss bis eben zu diesem dunkelblau - violett.

This one here is my favorite though. The blue color is just amazing! In this area all the iris are a little bit different - from almost white to this dark blue - purple.

Letzten Herbst habe ich einige dieser Margeriten gesetzt. Bisher bluehen aber erst nur zwei davon. Anfangs war diese ganz weiss. Mit der Zeit hat sie sich dann eher rosa gefaerbt. Ich glaube, sie sollte schlussendlich eigentlich ganz dunkelrosa werden.

Last fall I planted a few of thos daisys. Sofar only two of them are blooming. In the beginning completely white, they changed to a light pink later on. I think they are supposed to turn to a very dark pink later on.

Es gibt jetzt ganz schoen viel in den rot bzw. rosa-Toenen: der Rhododendron ist mittlerweile aufgeblueht und ist leider schon wieder fast verblueht. Die Bluetezeit kommt mir aeusserst kurz vor. Der Strauch ist noch recht klein, aber immerhin sind jedes Jahr mehr Blueten daran. Auch die Akelei hat mit den ersten Blueten begonnen. Ich habe mir heuer noch ein paar weitere gesetzt, nur mit anderen Farben. Die Weigele ist nun wirklich schoen zu betrachten: eine Bluete nach der anderen. Auch der kriechende Phlox duerfte sich schlussendlich doch noch erholt haben und hat ein paar Blueten begonnen. Die Steinnelken haben auch wieder begonnen. Nachdem ich sie aber im letzten Jahr ordentlich geteilt habe, habe ich heuer kein schoenes Bluetenmeer. Hoffentlich waechst er wieder recht fleissig und fuellt die leeren Bereiche in den Beeten aus. Die kleine rote Bluete kenne ich leider nicht. Da muss ich wohl was gepflanzt haben und schon wieder vergessen haben. Glaube nicht, dass die alleine dort aufgegangen ist, nachdem ich mehrere davon habe.

There is a lot of stuff blooming in red or pink now. The rhododendron is already almost done blooming again. It seems to bloom for such a short time only. It's still a very small shrub. At least each year there are more blooms on there. The columbine also started getting blooms. I planted a few more this spring, just with different colors. The weigela is great to look at now: one bloom next to the other. Even the creeping phlox finally looks healthy again and got a few blooms. The same with the dianthus. I separated it severly last year, so I don't have a sea of blooms this year. I hope it continues growing to fill out the empty spots in the beds. I don't know the little red flower. I must have put it there because there are several of it in the same area. I just have no idea what it could be.

Etwas ganz Neues. Ich musste meine Bestellunterlagen hervorkramen um nachzusehen, was es genau ist. Ich habe in der Naehe auch Allium gepflanzt. Nur sieht es ja doch etwas anders aus. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Nectaroscordum, auch bulgarischer Lauch genannt, und gehoert irgendwie doch zu der Alliumfamilie. Die Bluetenfarbe ist leider schwer zu erkennen, ausser man legt sich auf den Ruecken, um nachsehen zu koennen. Ich moechte wirklich nicht wissen, was sich die Leute denken muessen, wenn sie mich dauernd mit der Kamera in so komischen Positionen beobachten koennen. Ich hoffe, dass sie sich fleissig weitervermehren, damit es dann umso wirkungsvoller ist.

Something very new for me. I had to find the papers from where I ordered it to look up its name. I also planted some alliums closeby. However, they look a little bit different. It's a nectaroscordum and belongs to the same family like alliums. It's hard to see the color of the bloom, unless you lay on your back and look up. I really don't want to know what people must be thinking when they constantly can see me with the camera outside in weird positions. I really hope that it will continue growing and get more, so it looks even better.

Noch etwas, wovon ich vorher noch nie gehoert hatte. Letztes Wochenende beim Rasenmaehen sah ich so eine weisse samtige Kugel im Gras liegen. Ich dachte mir urspruenglich, dass es vielleicht ein Eichhoernchen oder ein Vogel angeschleppt haette. Angreifen wollte ich es aber nicht, weil ich mir nicht sicher war, was es ist. Am naechsten Tag sehe ich schon wieder welche. Diesemal ist mir aber aufgefallen, dass sie an einem Blatt festhaengen. Ich hab dann eine vorsichtig aufgeschnitten. Darin befinden sich Samen. Also dachte ich mir, dass das wohl was pflanzliches sein muss. Kurz spaeter sehe ich ca. 5 weitere noch auf einem Eichenbaum haengen. Ich hab mich dann an den Computer gesetzt um das nachzuforschen. Entangled hat zufaellig anfangs dieser Woche auch darueber berichtet. Es handelt sich dabei um Pflanzengallen. Und es hat eigentlich mit Insekten zu tun, die sonderartiges Wachstum an Baeumen hervorrufen koennen. Sehr oft ist die Eiche davon betroffen. In diesem Fall stammt es von der Gallwespe. Ich habe den genauen deutschen Namen dieser Galle nicht herausfinden koennen. Im Englischen wird es "wool sower gall" genannt. Der Baum wird normalerweise dadurch nicht beschaedigt, sondern laediglich als Wirt verwendet. Die Wespe entwickelt sich in den samenartigen Gebilden und schluept dann im Fruehjahr.

Something else, which I never heard about before. Last weekend when cutting the grass I noticed a white fuzzy ball in the grass. I thought a squirrel or a bird must have brought it.

I was very tempted to touch it to see if it actually feels like it looks like, but since I didn't know what it really was I stayed away from it. The next day I saw a couple more. This time I noticed they are attached to a leave. I carefully cut one open and saw some seeds. So I thought it's some kind of plant. A short time later I see about 5 of them still hanging on one of the oak trees. So I started my research online. By coincidence Entangled also posted about it earlier this week. It's a wool sower gall. And it actually has to do with insects, namely gall wasps, which cause this tumor on trees. Usually the tree doesn't get damaged by them, just used as a host. The wasps are developing in the "seeds". The wool sower gall is mainly seen with white oaks and in spring.

Ganz hinten im Garten wachsen ein paar Himbeerstauden. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob wild oder vom Vorbesitzer gepflanzt. Im ersten Jahr hat mein Mann immer alles abgemaeht. Er sieht keinen Unterschied zwischen Unkraut und richtigen Pflanzen. Mittlerweile sind sie wieder recht gewachsen und zum ersten Mal sind mir die weissen Blueten aufgefallen.

In the very back yard are a few raspberry plants. I am not sure if they are growing wild or planted by the previous owners. In the first year my husband always cut everything with the lawn mower. He can't see a difference between weeds and real plants. In the meantime they grew back and this year I noticed the beautiful white blooms for the first time.

Neues Wachstum: Ich hatte drei Grape-Myrtle, die ich letzten Spaetsommer verpflanzt habe. Ich haette es wahrscheinlich spaeter machen sollen oder viel mehr giessen sollen. Aber ich hielt mich an die Wasservorschriften. Ueberall im oeffentlichen Raum haben die nun schon seit Wochen Blaetter nur meine sind noch immer kahl. Ich dachte mir schon, sie haben wohl den Umzug nicht ueberlebt und wollte sie rausgeben. Da sehe ich bei einer ganz kleine Blaetteransaetze. Mittlerweile kann man sie schon ganz sehen. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob die anderen zwei auch noch kommen werden. Ich habe sie jetzt mal zurueckgeschnitten und werde sie mal noch drinnen lassen und naechstes Jahr weitersehen.

Auch meine Foeher beginnt wieder neu auszutreiben. Sie steht vor dem Haus und wird hoffentlich eines Tages uns etwas besseren Sichtschutz von der Strasse aus geben.

Rechts unten ist die Stella d'Ora. Taglilien sind einfach etwas wunderbares.

New growth: I have three crape-myrtles, which I moved last summer. I probably should have done it in fall or gave them more water, but I followed our water restrictions. Everwhere in the streets you can already see their new leaves for the last few weeks. Just mine are still bare. I already thought I killed them and wanted to take them out. In the last minute I noticed tiny little leave buds. In the meantime they are a little bit bigger. I am not sure if the other one are also still alive. I cut them back and will leave them in there this year and see next year. Also my pine tree is getting new branches. It's right in front of the house and hopefully will block the view from the street. On the right bottom is the Stella d'Ora. I just love daylilies.

Zum Abschluss noch ein paar blaue Impressionen. Am liebsten haette ich eine blau-orange Gartenecke. Am orangen Teil muss ich noch ordentlich weiterarbeiten.

To end this week's tour some blue impressions. I would love to have a corner with just blue and orange flowers. Sofar I don't have too many orange flowers yet though. Still need to work on that.

Spaziergang im Wald und am See - Walk through the Woods and to the Lake

Ich habe das schoene Wetter dieses Wochenende genossen und habe viel Zeit draussen verbracht. Heute morgen bin ich in den Park gefahren. Dort gibt es ein Waldstueckchen mit einem ca. 1 1/2 km langem Naturlehrpfad. Es gab ein paar kleine Wildblumen, von denen ich aber natuerlich keine Namen weiss. Eine kleine Broschuere gab ein paar Informationen ueber ein paar Baeume. Zum Teil waren sie allerdings nicht mehr dort. Interessant waren aber ein paar Eichen, die eine Zeitlang waagrecht gewachsen sind. Es ist kaum zu glauben, aber die sind trotz kleinem Hohlraum sehr stabil. Ein paar grosse Baeume sind samt Wurzeln umgefallen. Das muss glaube ich schon laenger passiert sein, denn wir haben schon lange keinen grossen Sturm gehabt. Anscheinend wird soetwas nicht aufgeraeumt, sondern bleibt einfach zum Verrotten liegen.

I enjoyed the nice weekend and spent a lot of time outside. This morning I went to a park. There is a small wooden area with a nature trail. I noticed a few small wildflowers, from which I don't know the names. A small pamphlet gave information about the trees there. However, quite often the trees discussed were not there anymore. Some of the oaktrees were very interesting though. For a while they grew horizontally. Despite having a hole, they are still very sturdy. Some of the big trees were lying around, completely uprooted. That must have happend quite a while ago because we didn't have any big storms lately. It seems they don't take care of fallen trees like that. They are just left to rot.


Gleich in der Naehe gibt es auch einen kleinen See. Die Gaense waren ueberhaupt nicht scheu, obwohl sich einige Angler dort aufhielten und auch Familien mit Kinder und Hunden einigen Laerm machten. Es machte Spass, ihnen beim fischen, baden und putzen zuzusehen.
Not too far away is also a small lake. The geese there were not even shy though there were a few people fishing and families with kids and dogs running around. They enjoyed having some small fish-snacks and getting a bath afterwards. It's very entertaining to watch them cleaning themselves.

Gemeinsamkeiten - Similarities

Nachdem wir heute hier keinen Feiertag haben, nur schnell was zum Anschauen. Beim gestrigen Rundgang habe ich folgendes Neues entdeckt.

Since it's a normal workday here today (this year both Labor day and also Christ ascencion fall on the same day in Austria) just a quick picture. I saw both yesterday when checking up on new stuff in the garden.
