Monticello

Vergangenen Sonntag hatten wir herrlichstes Herbstwetter mit strahlendem Sonnenschein und Temperaturen von 20 Grad. Morgen frueh sollen wir dafuer die ersten Schneeschauer bekommen:(

Also machten wir einen Ausflug nach Monticello. Ich war ganz erstaunt, wieviele Blumen dort noch am Bluehen sind. Zusammen mit der schoenen Herbstfaerbung der Baeume gab das ganze ein wunderbares Bild. Nachdem ich dort viel zu viele Fotos gemacht habe, werde ich die besten in Collagen zeigen.

Last Sunday we had gorgeous fall weather with lots of sunshine and temperatures around 70. Tomorrow morning we should get the first snowshowers though:(

So we went to Monticello. I was very surprised how many flowers were still blooming. Together with the colorful trees everything looked very nice. I really enjoyed being there. Since I took so many pictures, I am going to show them all in different collages.

Monticello gehoerte dem 3. US Praesidenten, Thomas Jefferson, und ist daher ein recht anschaulicher Besitz. Das Haus ist nur zum Teil fuer die Oeffentlichkeit zugaenglich. Dafuer gibt es viele verschiedene Bereiche draussen zu erforschen.

Monticello belonged to the third US-President Thomas Jefferson. It's therefore quite a big area to walk around in. The house is partly open to the public. There are lots of different little areas outside to discover though.

Das Haus hat auch einen Wintergarten. Nachdem es noch so schoen warm war, gab es einige Zitronen- und Orangenbaeume auch auf der Terasse zu besichtigen.

The house also has a wintergarden. Since it was so warm, there were a few lemon and orangeplants on the porch.

Der Gemuesegarten war riesig. Ich moechte mir gar nicht vorstellen, den bearbeiten zu muessen. Ein paar Gemuesesorten warteten noch, geerntet zu werden. Andere waren noch am Bluehen.

The vegetable garden is huge. I don't even want to imagine to weed that one. There were still a few vegetables waiting to be harvested. Others were still blooming.

Zu allerlezt noch ein paar farbliche Impressionen ohne Worte von Baeumen und Blumen.

Ich bin jetzt leider schon seit Wochen nicht dazugekommen, meine Blogrunde zu drehen. Ich werde daher versuchen, mich in den naechsten Tagen durchzulesen.

I didn't get around the last few weeks to check in on my favorite blogs. I will try starting reading tomorrow.

Schoener Herbst - Beautiful Fall

Bisher kann ich mich nicht uber den Herbst beschweren: Temperaturen waren bis vor kurzem noch aeusserst warm und die Waelder zeigen sich mit den herrlichsten Farben. Ab und zu gab es ein wenig Morgennebel, der aber bald von der Sonne wieder abgeloest wurde.
Sofar I can't complain about fall: until recently it has been extremely warm and the trees show their most beautiful colors. Once in a while there was some morning fog around, which got quickly replaced by sunshine again.


So, schoen langsam neigt sich das Gartenjahr wirklich dem Ende zu. Mir kommt vor, als ob ich von Woche zu Woche nur mehr dieselben Blumen zeigen kann. Tatsaechlich bringen meine wenigen "Dauerblueher" noch immer recht schoen Farbe in den Garten.
Slowly, the garden year is comig to an end. It seems that I can only show the same flowers from week to week. My "constant bloomers" are still bringing color to my garden.
Darunter befinden sich schon seit Monaten der Schmetterlingsflieder, Salbei und Perovskia.
Butterflyshrub, sage, and perovskia have been blooming for months.

Verschiedenste Blautoene sind demnach momentan vorherrschend.
Therefore there are lots of different shades of blue in my garden at the moment.

Seit einer Woche neu ist die Kroetenlilie. Im Sommer befuerchtete ich schon, dass sie vollkommen verdorrt war. Mit den abkuehlenden Temperaturen und Regen hat sie allerdings noch mal einen Wachstumsschub bekommen und nun endlich auch die Blueten. Sie sind viel kleiner als ich dachte, dafuer aber wunderschoen.
New is the toadlily. I already thought I killed it in summer by not watering it enough. With the dropping temperatures and rain it grew quite a bit again and finally got its blooms. They are tinier than I expected, but beautiful.

Hier noch mal die Gaura. Endlich sieht man die Blueten so richtig schoen und nun gefaellt sie mir auch dort.

Eine Sterngladiole. Die Zwiebeln waren noch vom letzten Jahr, mit den Gladiolen zusammengeworfen. Ich hatte total vergessen, dass ich die hatte.
I completely forgot about my acidantheras. I still had the bulbs from last year and they were tossed together with the gladiolas.


Diese Dahlie faengt auch gerade zum ersten Mal zum Bluehen an. Schon komisch, dass meine andere um soviel frueher zu bluehen begonnen hat.
This dalia ist just starting to bloom. Weird that my other one has been blooming since early summer.

Auch der Abendhimmel zeigt sich jetzt wiederum mehr mit Rottoenen. Das Christkind hat anscheinend schon zum Backen begonnen.
The sky in the evening also shows lots of red again. In Austria we are saying that the "Christkind" (= angel-like, baby Jesus, who brings christmas presents for kids) is baking when the sky is red.

Herbstdekoration - Fall Decorations

Cosmo erwaehnte in ihrem letzten Post, wie sehr die Yucca das trockene Klima lieben. Aber auch bei uns sehe ich oft einige Wildwachsende am Strassenrand. Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich eine "neue" entdeckt. Auch nur deshalb, weil sie auch jetzt noch schoen blueht. Heute habe ich mich jetzt dorthin aufgemacht, um ein Foto zu machen. Die Qualitaet ist nicht die allerbeste, nachdem sie vom Auto aus gemacht worden sind. Bei diesen bin ich mir allerdings nicht so sicher, wie "wild" sie wirklich sind. Das Nachbarsgrundstueck gehoert einer Gaertnerei. Vielleicht haben die sie ja dorthin ausgesetzt. Ich finde es einfach schoen, vor allem jetzt in Oktober noch so einen Bluetenstab zu sehen.

Cosmo mentioned in her last post how much the yucca love dry climate. Even here you can see quite a lot of wild growing yucca on the side of the roads. A couple weeks ago I noticed some. Only because they were still blooming. Finally I went there today to take a couple pictures. The quality is not the best one though since I didn't get out of the car. I am not really sure how "wild" these ones are, since there is a nursery next door. Maybe they planted it many years ago in that spot. I find them beautiful, especially since they are still blooming now in October.


Nachdem ich dann schon mal dort war, habe ich natuerlich dann auch gleich bei der Gaertnerei vorbeigeschaut. Momentan stehen hier die Kuerbisse in alle Farben und Formen im Vordergrund. Wenn man vorbeifahert, sieht man diese grossartige Dekoration.
Since I was already in the area, I also stopped at the nursery. Right now pumpkins in all shapes and colors are the focus. When you drive by you see this great decoration.


Kuerbisse habe ich mir heute keine gekauft. Ein paar Hortensien sind aber mit nach Hause gekommen. Das einzige herbstliche, das ich gekauft habe, war ein Strohballen. Ich werde das Stroh im Winter zum Schutz meiner Bananenstaude verwenden.
I didn't buy an pumpkins today though. However, a couple hydrengeas that were on sale came along. I also got a bale of straw, which I am going to use to protect my bananaplant a little bit in winter.

Heuer scheinen auch Maisstaengel ganz gross in Mode zu sein. Bei der Gaertnerei gab es sie um 7 Dollar das Stueck. Ich denke man braucht dafuer den geeigneten Platz, damit es auch schoen aussieht. In der Stadt sind jetzt viele Ampelmasten damit dekoriert.
Cornstalks seem to be in fashion this year. The nursery sold them for 7 Dollars a piece. I think you need the right place for it too look nice as a decoration. Many of city's light poles are decorated with it this year.

Oft sieht man ja in den Gaertnereien Beispiele (fuer Leute wie mich), was gut kombinierbar ist. Farblich gefaellt mir diese Zusammenstellung hier sehr gut. Ich hab's aber dann doch bleiben lassen. Zu Hause gibt es noch genug zum Aufraeumen.
Nurseries often show examples of nice plant combination (perfect for people like me who need some extra help). I really like the color combination on this one. I decided though not to get anything at the moment. There is still lots to do at home without new stuff.

Zum Abschluss noch mehr Kuerbisfarben. Einfach schoen, so ein leuchtendes Orange.

Roter Herbst - Red Fall

Trotz sommerlichen Blumen, ist der Herbst auch hier schon da. Mir kommt vor, als ob sich die Baeume heuer um einiges frueher verfaerben. Ich hab vor kurzem bei meinen Fotos vom letzten Jahr nachgesehen und tatsaechlich hatten wir dann mitte November noch die schoenste Farbenpracht. Glaube kaum, dass das heuer auch so sein wird.
Die Graeser sind von meinem Garten - alles andere wurde bei einem Spaziergang letztes Wochenende fotografiert. Das bluehende Gras (Name?) blueht heuer zum ersten Mal. Ich denke es wird umso schoener, je buschiger der Stock wird. Das Pampasgras im Hintergrund ist mein 2. Versuch. Das vom letzten Jahr ist mir uebern Winter verfault. Dieses wurde jetzt in die Pralle Sonne gesetzt und ich glaube bisher gefaellt es ihm dort ganz gut. Bluehen tut es heuer halt noch nicht.

Even though there are still a few summer flowers around, fall is definitely here. It seems that this year the fall colors are much earlier than last year. I recently looked at my pictures from last year and we still had great foliage mid November. I doubt that this will be the case this year.
The grasses are from my garden. Everything else was taken when going for a walk last weekend. The blooming grass (flame grass?) is blooming for the first time this year. I think it will look even better when it gets bigger and taller. The pampasgrass is my second attempt. My first one rotted over last winter. This one I planted in full sun and sofar it seems to like its location. It's not blooming yet though.



Rot ist momentan die dominierende Farbe im Garten. Die Korkspindel ist schon ganz schoen verfaerbt. Letztes Jahr machte ich mit dem Farbenwechsel eine Diashow. Ich glaube wirklich nicht, dass ich dieses Jahr so lange darauf warten muss. Aber auch andere einzelne Blaetter, wie von den Azaleen, bekommen eine leichte Herbstfaerbung. Viele Straeucher wie die Stechpalme bekommen jetzt ihre roten Beeren. Die Bluete des Sedum geht auch ihrem Ende zu. Sogar das Wasser in meinem Vogelbad hat sich rot gefaerbt. Bin mir nicht sicher warum. Die Eichhoernchen haben anscheinend dort ganz schoen ihren Mist abgeladen. Die Eicheln sind aber nicht rot. Also raetselhaft.
Red is the dominating color in my garden at the moment. The burning bush is already quite red. Last year I made a slideshow with the color changes. I don't think I have to wait that long this year for it. Some other single leaves, like the ones from azaleas, are also changing to red. Many shrubs are getting berries. The sedum is done blooming. Even the water in my birdbath looks red. It seems that the squirrels dumped all their trash in there. Which still doesn't explain the color. The nuts are not red. Really strange.

Nochmals Sommer - Summer again

Die letzten paar Wochen hatte ich wenig Zeit oder Lust mich mit dem Garten zu beschaeftigen. In der Folge daher auch nicht mit dem Gartenblog. Von Zeit zu Zeit machte ich schon eine Runde, um zu sehen was sich tut. Heute entdeckte ich was Neues.
The last few weeks I didn't have much time or desire to do stuff outside. Therefore I didn't work on the gardenblog either. From time to time I walked around to take pictures and to see what's new.

Ich hab einige Samen im Fruehjahr gestreut, die alle ueberhaupt nichts geworden sind. Bis auf das hier. Ist es eine Zinnie? Ich hab keine Ahnung. Es ist ein recht grosses Ungetuem - so huefthoch. Daher bin ich mir nicht so sicher.
I got quite a few seeds in the spring. None of them turned out, except this here. Is it a zinnia? I have no idea. It's quite huge though - it goes up to my hips. I didn't think zinnias would grow that tall.


Es wird jetzt merklich kaelter, vor allem in der Nacht. Diese Woche hatten wir in der Frueh nur 10 Grad. Unter Tags heizt es allerdings schon noch ordentlich auf. Es gab auch immer wieder Regen. Sovieles blueht jetzt um einiges schoener nachdem alles immer so schoen durchweicht wird. Diese Gladiole blueht jetzt schon seit 2-3 Wochen.
Weatherwise it's much cooler now, especially at night. In the mornings temps are only in the mid 40s. During the day it still gets quite warm though. There was also lots of rain, which my plants just seem to love. Everything looks so much nicer now than during the whole summer. This gladiola has been blooming for the past 2-3 weeks.


Auch der Salbei blueht praechtiger denn je. Neben ihm sieht jetzt endlich auch die "Fountain Gaura" recht nett aus. Das ganze Jahr ueber lagen die Bluetenstiele nur rum, sodass man die Blueten gar nicht richtig sehen konnte.
Also the salvia looks better than before and it always looked nice. Next to it is the fountain gaura. Finally it seems to look quite nice. All year long the stems were laying everywhere, so you couldn't even see the blooms.



Meine "tropische" Ecke ist auch noch sehr schoen. Die Canna stossen noch immer eine Bluete nach der anderen hervor - wenn auch langsamer und kleiner. Die Bananenstaude hat sich auch praechtig entwickelt. Es ist noch nicht sehr hoch, aber ich entdeckte heute, dass sich ein zweiter Pseudostamm aus der Erde hervorwagte. Nicht mehr lange, und sie muss wieder fuer den Winter eingepackt werden.
My "tropical" corner also still looks nice. The canna are still producing one bloom after the next, though the intervals are getting longer and the blooms smaller. My banana plant looks great. It's not very high yet. However, I noticed today a second pseudostem next to the bigger one. Not too much longer and it needs to get some "clothing" for the winter.


Vor den Canna habe ich heuer Taglilien gepflanzt, die heuer allerdings noch nicht bluehten. Dafuer sind die Blaetter auch jetzt noch schoen - verglichen mit den vergilbten von den aelteren Taglilien.
In front of the canna I planted a few daylilies this year. They didn't bloom yet. Their leaves still look very nice compared to the ones from the older daylilies.



Auch das Perovskia laeuchtet im schoenen Blau. Wie man sieht, gibt es hier noch mehr als genug Unkraut. Ich werde mich also jetzt mal nach draussen aufmachen und ihm den Garaus machen. Die herbstlichen Fotos muessen auf heute Abend oder morgen warten.
I really love the perovskia. As you can see it is still surrounded by lots of weeds. So I will go outside right now and get rid of it. My fall pictures have to wait until tonight or tomorrow.
